I had the pleasure of helping Michael and Daphne cross a chunk of the Pacific from French Polynesia to Fiji, via Samoa. It fulfilled a long held ambition to complete a major ocean passage and I couldn’t have chosen a better way to do it. Daphne is a perfect Bluewater cruiser for a crew of two. She was fast and tracked straight down the 4-5 metre swells thanks to her long keel. Michael struck the right balance between confidence and sufficient respect for the untamed ocean.

During my 6 weeks aboard, I experienced the full range of cruising experiences. From days lounging around at anchor waiting for weather or dinghies to be delivered to some fairly challenging conditions in the days after we left Maupiti. In between, there were some memorable hikes and bike rides and even some blissfully calm „champagne“ sailing as we glided serenely through the Samoan and Fijian islands.

We had many interesting conversations and Michael deserves a medal for persevering in English and enduring endless meals of my bolognese sauce. A note for future crew: Michael loves spaghetti almost as much ice cream
Thank you Michael for taking a punt on an unknown Australian and I sincerely hope our paths cross again somewhere on this beautiful BLUE planet.
